Atlantic Forum in Bilbao


This week, CAAC Coordinator, Ms. Tamara Guirao, travelled to Bilbao to attend on behalf of the Atlantic Arc Cities the Spanish Atlantic Forum: Maritime Spatial Planning and Climate Change Mitigation under the Ecosystem Approach.

The opening session demonstrated the clear political engagement around the Atlantic Strategy, with the addresses of M. Guillermo Echenique, External Action Minister of the Basque government (in office), Ms. Ségolene Royal, President of Poitou- Charentes Regional Council, M. Andrés Trastoy, Director General for fishery resources at the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Ms. Izaskun Bilbao, Member of the European Parliament, M. Luis Pariza, Member of the Economic and Social Committee and rapporteur for the Atlantic Strategy and M. Matthew King, Head of Unit, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The territorial dimension was enhanced by the speeches of M. Luis Cañada Vicinay, Chairman of the Basque Maritime Cluster (Foro Marítimo Vasco) and M. Jokin Díaz Arsuaga, Vice-regional minister for the Environment, Territorial Planning, Agriculture and Fisheries (in office) of the Basque government

The keynote speaker, Mr. Ángel Borja, Principal researcher – AZTI-Tecnalia, presented an awesome analysis of the implications of Climate change for the Atlantic regions. You can see the video here and his presentation here.

Then, the audience was invited to join the workshops in parallel sessions: the Ecosystem approach in Fisheries management, Offshore Aquaculture, Renewable Energies: Industrial development, Intermodal transport services and maritime safety.
